VO2max is the most cited biomarker in longevity. Measure it directly, along with resting metabolism and fat oxidation, what the body burns at rest and which fuel it burns under load, without sending anyone to a lab.
Measure the key metric
Almost every longevity protocol treats VO2max as a headline number, but direct measurements are rare. Estimates from a smartwatch or a step test are convenient, and they are estimates: they infer oxygen uptake from heart rate instead of measuring the oxygen and carbon dioxide actually moving through the lungs.
Direct measurement used to mean a metabolic cart in a dedicated room, which is why it stayed with elite sport and clinical research. Metabolic profile
Metabolic flexibility, measured rather than assumed: whether this client oxidizes fat efficiently and at which intensity. It is the half of a longevity program that dietary advice usually guesses at.
Tells you: Substrate utilization, Ventilatory thresholds and zones.
Resting metabolism
How much energy the body burns at rest. A resting test, no exercise involved, and the baseline that makes a nutrition conversation concrete instead of generic.
Tells you: Resting metabolic rate.
